Counselling for Children, Teens and Young Adults

Our youth are precious. They are also very difficult to understand because they have their own views of the world and those views do not fit well with adult ideas of how things should be.

We teach:

  • Anger Management skills and techniques.
  • Social Skill development for youth with poor socialization.
  • Self worth/esteem building for all with poor confidence.
  • Working with youths that have been bullied or are involved with bullying.
  • Working with youth behaviours that have incurred police involvement

 

Drawing on a mixture of Cognitive Behavioural, Psychodynamic, and Family Systems therapies, and using a range of art and play techniques, children of all ages are encouraged to identify, explore, and resolve behavioural and emotional struggles.  Working with their strengths as well as their interests, children and adolescents enjoy and willingly participate in the therapeutic process.

The road to discovery:

Children are naturally carefree.  This is how they were meant to experience the world. As one year adds to another, so do their cares add to each other. Sometimes kids take on too many cares and this distresses them.  Sometimes kids dismiss the cares of themselves and others and this distresses their parents.  The formation of a stable and healthy identity is difficult.

 

 

images (4)Tweens and Teens face many new challenges in this extremely fast-paced world. The standards for “good enough” seem to be higher and harder to achieve and the pressure to succeed can challenge even the most resilient children. Furthermore, the world of social media is complex and difficult to navigate.  It is understandable that pre-teenagers and teenagers may feel anxious, disappointed, overwhelmed and confused, to some degree, about how to manage these growing academic, emotional and social demands.  Similarly, parents frequently struggle with how to help their kids develop and maintain positive self-worth while setting appropriate, consistent and fair expectations.

 

Social Skills/Learning Difficulties

Not all children learn to read and respond appropriately to social cues simply through the process of growing up. Developmental and neurological challenges, ADD, as well as anxiety, and low self-esteem often affect social skill development.  These social skills issues can continue into adulthood, and often result is young adults who feel
socially isolated, bewildered or intimidated in social settings such as college and/or work.

Feelings of self -doubt and anxiety can erode the self- esteem and self-confidence needed to move forward.  Learning Disabilities, ADD/ADHD, and autism spectrum challenges can add to the difficulties of growing up.

 

 

 

Music Therapies

Music Therapy for teensMusic Therapy is used to decrease signs and feelings of depression, boost overall mood, reduce the perception of pain and restore overall health – not to mention that music taps into the brain reward systems.  That music can be a great way to express our feelings in a safe setting.    That the right music taps into the part of us that still feels whole – like our best self. There is much evidence to indicate that music therapy can improve mobility, memory, and language.

I have witnessed many amazing expressions of emotion through music production, the depth of lyrics expressed from the young explores past pain and thus starts the road towards healing.

Groups

In a group setting appropriate to age, gender and social skill strength and weaknesses, children learn those social skills that will help them make and keep friends more successfully. While learning in a group context, each child has individual treatment goals and skills to practice between sessions.
QVTP also offer a powerful in schools youth programme.

For Tweens, Teens…

Teen groups are similar to children’s groups in many ways but focus on more sophisticated skills and the issues most important to teens including social media, peer pressure, and understanding the unwritten codes of friendships and relationships. While specific role playing activities and games are useful to teach social skills to this age group, it is the interactions amongst the group members that provide the most opportunities for learning new or enhanced social skills. Again Art and Music modalities facilitate a medium for youth to express as does journalling their world.

For Young Adults

The young adults in the group have a voice in determining their own goals and they collaborate together on the goals for the group.  Social skills are taught and practiced during role- playing, but the  “in the moment” interactions amongst group members provide the greatest opportunities for social skill learning.   Guidance for practice of the social skills is provided and strongly recommended to maximize improvement

Social skills are taught through role-playing, games, and discussions and those “teachable moments” that come up regularly in a group setting.  Because the most important component of a “good” group is the “fit” of the children and teens, all youth are carefully screened before placement.
